Black Dresses And The Twentieth Century

The wars and social upheavals brought radical changes in recent history of European dress. This century witnessed the birth and fall of high fashion, how did the clothing, the role of youth in the evolution of black dresses fashion, and transforming this into a mass product in a mass society.

The first 30 years

With the turn of the century Belle Epoque disappears and with it, the costumes themselves turn of the century. In 1902 appears trotteur, the new suit female, who first discovered the foot. Perhaps the biggest change was the elimination of the corset in 1906 by Paul Poiret and Vionnet creators. This was a significant event that accompanied the struggle of women against social and political constraints. From here begins the great revolutions: in 1911 appeared the first bathing suits and black dresses.

From World War I, and after five centuries, reappeared the natural silhouette of the woman with the ability to reveal the legs. During the war, the discomfort of working with long dresses and imposed a change, as usual with all sudden changes, the adjustment was brutal, since mid-1920 had raised black dresses to the knee.

There were however many voices who criticized these changes. In 1914 the League of German Dressmakers and ladies Parisian aristocrats denounced "the immorality of the new suit," angered by the simplicity of the new clothing. In the U.S., where the battle was fierce, the law specified: "It is forbidden to all women wear skirts or petticoats whose edge, finding that up, get up over 15 cm of soil.

Showing skin

The 1920 finds a new woman who works and who dares to show the legs. The flappers, independent modern girls, shorten their black dresses above the knee, cut and dye their hair, wear suits and shirts, and find swimsuits. Meanwhile, men forget the coat and substitute a lighter jacket, jacket.

The little black dress

In the 1930 French fashion designer Coco Chanel's revolutionized the way women dress to add to your wardrobe a garment that had hitherto been the exclusive preserve of men, pants, and from that moment any experiment of dressing has come to be regarded as a fashion. The fashion capital Paris is no longer just Hollywood starts also a trendsetter. This is how a new style of women comes, defined by actresses such as Greta Garbo and Katharine Hepburn: black dresses lengthened again, and succeed evening dresses with low necklines in the back.
